Toulouse-Lautrec spent much of his short adult life in the artistic quarters of Paris - especially around Pigalle and Montmartre..., as well as frequenting the most famous music halls, theaters, restaurants, bars, circuses and "maisons closes" of the day - including many that still exist, such as the Moulin Rouge and the Folies Bergères.
Toulouse-Lautrec was a well-known and much-loved character in late 19th century Paris, albeit controversial -- with his distinctive hat, cane and beard - a friend of many of the most famous performers, artists, painters, actors, impressarios, writers and decadent dandies of the day: figures such as Vincent Van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, Charles Conder, plus infamous actresses and Cancan dancers Jane Avril, Yvette Guilbert and "La Goulue"
